WasteApp is mainly designed to promote pro-environmental behaviors of tourists and generate postive impact on the waste management in tourist cities.
It is launched under the URBAN WASTE project, which aims to develop better strategies for waste management in European tourist cities. According to the website, the pilot cities that participated in this project are Florence (IT), Nice (FR), Lisbon (PT), Syracuse (IT), Copenhagen (DK), Kavala (GR), Santander (ES), Nicosia (CY), Ponta Delgada (PT), Dubrovnik – Neretva county (HR), Tenerife (ES).
The app uses points as the motivation system to encourage users’ good behaviors, including correct use of bins, promotion of their use on social media, etc.. The points accumulated can be exchanged for gifts or services provided by the participating cities or entities. The app also provides information on waste/recycling locations, collection time, policies and other eco-tips.
