Into the Wild is a biographical movie about the story of Christopher McCandless. After graduating with high honours from university, he goes on a hiking journey across North America. He has become disconnected from modern society and rejects his conventional life, by destroying all of his credit cards and identification documents and he donates most of his savings. During his journey, he encounters many people that live off the grid and have a similar lifestyle as to what he envisions.
The movie presents its character as a more broken and flawed ambivalent type of eco-hero. Christopher can be seen as a cultural symbol of societal alienation as he goes on his eco-quest to act out his fantasy of living in the wilderness.
