The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has announced that Formula 1 is aiming to field a generation of a new power unit by 2025. Since growing concerns about the impact of human activity on the environment emerged from fans and critics, the FIA has launched an initiative to develop a 100% sustainable fuel. Their aim is to develop a completely sustainable fuel that is as effective as the current status quo and scale up the production so that it can be used for a wider social use.
Smith and Westerbeek (2004) list various types of impact that sport can have on our environment and recognize that sport in general poses a “threat” to our environment through gas emissions and land clearing. Some examples include: the use of fuels in motorsports, habitat destruction through construction, unsustainable manufacturing processes and the lack of clean transport to sport venues.
